It was the meeting of Final Four perennials of the past and future, in the form of Louisville's Denny Crum and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. It was also a match up of two of the most sought after freshmen in the country; Pervis Ellison and Danny Ferry. "Never Nervous" Pervis netted 25 points and grabbed down 11 boards to lead the Cardinals to a 72-69 victory over #1 Duke in the NCAA Final. The title was the second of the decade for Louisville. Ellison was named tournament MVP, being the first freshman to win the honor since 1944.
